# Reading competitors instead of writing

An hour reading other people's takes was more productive than any blank-page brainstorm this year.

I spent an hour this week reading competitor blogs instead of writing our own content.

It was more productive than any blank-page brainstorming session I have had this year.

Not because they had better ideas. Because reading someone else's take on a problem you have been thinking about forces you to clarify what you actually believe. Where do you agree? Where does it fall apart? Where is the question you had not thought to ask?

We are building a system around this now. AI watches a shortlist of sites we respect, compares new articles to our own thinking, and surfaces the matches. Then a person decides what to say about it.

The automation handles the watching. The thinking is still ours.

I am genuinely unsure about the balance though. At what point does responding to other people's content stop being engagement and start being reactive? If anyone has found that line, I would like to hear how.
