# The reluctant sentence

Adjective lists produced AI fortune cookies. One sentence about internal conflict changed everything.

Spent weeks trying to write a tone of voice document. Went through the standard exercises — brand archetypes, personality spectrums, adjective lists.

Every version produced AI output that sounded like LinkedIn fortune cookie wisdom. "Great leadership starts with listening." That kind of thing.

Then I wrote one sentence: "I am reluctantly and often annoyed by my compulsion to do the right thing."

The AI output changed immediately. Texture. Friction. Sentences that occasionally pushed back against their own conclusions.

Turns out the useful brand layer isn't a list of adjectives. It's the internal conflicts — the places where your values rub against your instincts. That's what gives AI something to actually work with.

Still refining the method. But the adjective approach is dead for me.
